TikTok: A New Profession?

Updated: Oct 25, 2021

TikTok, the newest social media platform, is an app where a user can post fifteen seconds to three minute videos. The app features a “for you page” in which a user can scroll through countless videos based on their likes.

This app was previously called “musical.ly”, which was popular in 2016-2017. On this app, people would make short music videos to their favorite songs.

The app resurfaced as TikTok in 2018, and immediately was a hit. Various “tiktokers” quickly became well-known. An example of this fame is the D’Amelio sisters. Charli D’Amelio was a high school student in Connecticut that did competitive dancing. Overnight, she became famous and now has a podcast, clothing line, and works with many popular brands. Her fame made her sister, Dixie, well-known, too. Dixie is now pursuing a music and acting career. The D’Amelio family just launched their own television show.

To earn money from TikTok, you must be 18 years or older. You must have at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in the last 30 days. Once you meet these requirements, you can apply for the Creator Fund through the app.

TikTok said the Creator Fund was made to “support ambitious creators who are seeking opportunities to foster a livelihood through their innovative content.” Influencers can make two to four cents every 1,000 views. This can add up to be a lot of money.

A newly famous TikTok star, Emily Mariko, went viral for her salmon rice bowl recipe that has over 25 million views. After that video went viral, she now gets at least over one million views per video she posts. She’s making a lot of money.

As well as getting paid from apps like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, well-known brands will ask these influencers to do brand deals with them. This also generates a lot of revenue for the influencers. They’re getting a percentage that the brand makes from consumers buying their products from seeing the influencers advertise them on TikTok. By getting famous from these social media platforms, you’re opening a lot more possibilities for yourself.

Apps like Instagram and YouTube do things similar to TikTok and have created a new working class of “influencers”. I believe if you keep up the following and posting creative content TikTok can actually be a full-time profession.
