As much as we all hate to admit it, the time we spend on social media is a lot. The generation of young adults today grew up with the rise of new social media. Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, TikTok, Facebook— they all grew more popular as we were growing up.
Social media started as a way to share what you’re doing with your family and friends. It was a fun platform for young adults to share what they were up to. Today, it’s a lot more than that. First, I want to talk about the negatives of social media.
Most young adults treat social media today like their own brand. Each post is carefully thought out, edited, captioned, and posted. And if it doesn’t get enough likes? Archived.
Teen girls and young adult women might be the worst victims of social media. We often find ourselves comparing our features or our lives to other people on Instagram. I’m guilty of it, too. Although, not everything you see on social media is real, it’s painful to find yourself comparing.
Social media is also a platform for hate. Everyday, I see people tearing each other down on different platforms for one post. A lot of the time, they’re posts that you can tell they’ve taken a long time to create and put a lot of effort into, and people tear them down for the way the look or act. It breaks my heart to see that on various platforms.
Social media can be very brutal, however, the positives are evident. Social media is also a platform for expressing your beliefs and values. You can use social media to express yourself, which is a beautiful thing. It’s a platform for creativity. The possibilities are endless.
Social media creates togetherness. It connects you with people you don’t get to see everyday, or ever. For me, social media has given me some of my best relationships, because even when we couldn’t be together, we could still communicate with each other through social media.
Even though there are many negatives to social media, I believe the positives outweigh them. Young adults today grew up with these platforms, and use them to express themselves.
Social media plays a large role in young adults lives today. It keeps us connected and informed with one another. It gives us a space to freely express ourselves. It helps us create relationships. It gives us opportunities.
