Instagram for Beginners

As a young adult, Instagram has been a big social media platform since I was in fifth grade. In fact, it was the first form of social media I ever used. When Instagram started, it was primarily used to share pictures of what you were doing in the moment or what you did last weekend. People would post up to five times a day. Now, I post maybe once or twice a week.

Instagram has turned into a huge platform for sharing your beliefs, creating a brand, advertising products, and getting your name out there. And I’m here to guide you through it all.

You may come across Instagrams that look like they’re perfectly put together, matching, all-white with pops of blues. You may think to yourself “wow this feed is so beautiful that must have taken them forever”, it does.

It’s kind of crazy how much thought goes into one single Instagram post. As a member of my sorority’s social media team, there’s about five of us in charge of a single post.

The first thing we do, is take a look at our profile. Does the profile photo match the highlights? Does the new post match the other filters on the old photos? You have to make sure everything goes together for a more satisfying look.

For each post, we use the same filter, or preset, on an app called Lightroom. This makes it easy for the new post to match the others and created a unified look. Designing an Instagram is very much like designing a brand. You want the colors to go with the personality of your brand.

After the picture and filter is decided, we then think of a caption. Usually, we include various hashtags in the caption, so people are more likely to find our post that haven’t been to our page before. So, include various hashtags and also a location on your photo. Believe it or not, sometimes people do look under the locations and that’s how your post generates more followers and likes.

It’s important for a brand on Instagram to post frequently so they don’t lose follower interaction. The more you post, the more people see it and like it, making it more likely for your new post to pop up on their feed first next time they get on.

One of my favorite features on Instagram is when you make your profile a business profile. You can see how many people interacted with your post and where they came from. It lists various insights your post generated.

Instagram is evolving and many brands use it as their main platform for advertising and marketing new products. I would argue that it’s one of the most, if not the most, popular form of social media today.
